Water Efficiency Management Plans and Permanent Reporting Obligations

Factors such as the importance of sustainable business practices and our drought-prone climate have resulted in a change in today's business landscape.

Water efficiency and sustainability are the new ‘business as usual' practices.

The ‘Water Act 2000' and ‘Wild Rivers and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2006'

Major water users now have permanent reporting obligations under Queensland's water legislation:

Generally, these regulations mandate certain water efficiency related measures and obligations for businesses and other non-residential water users. For example:

  • applicable non-residential premises must submit a WEMP by stated timelines;
  • premises with approved WEMPs must report annually on their compliance, water savings and efficiencies achieved and any changes in circumstances in relation to mentioned matters; and
  • WEMP holders must review their water efficiency management plans at least every five years, however may be advised to do so more regularly as deemed appropriate by the water service provider (Ipswich Water).

Penalties and fines apply

Penalties and fines apply both for Ipswich Water in ensuring compliance with the legislation and processing applications in appropriate time frames, as well as for non-compliance by applicable non-residential water users.
