Getting Connected

Please note that Category 3 Trade Waste permits must be negotiated directly by contacting Ipswich Water's Retail Branch (Trade Waste Services) to develop a three year legal agreement. For more information, please contact our Trade Waste Services on (07) 3810 7892 or 3810 7936.

For Category 1 and 2 permits, please follow the process below.

Do I need to invoke or revisit a Trade Waste Permit?

There are circumstances in which a Trade Waste permit needs to be invoked or revisited. These include but may not be limited to:

(i)   new industrial/commercial premises;

(ii)  changes to processes or operations within existing industrial/commercial premises;

(iii) change of ownership within existing industrial/commercial premises;

(v) change of generator; and

(v) discharge to the sewerage service of substances other than prohibited substance, human waste or stormwater.

What type of approval do I need?

Trade Waste approvals are granted on a Permit System based on the volume and characteristics of the trade waste produced. See The Permit System and associated discharge category classifications.

Obtaining a Permit

A Trade Waste Application, signed by the owner or authorised agent and the generator must be lodged at the following times in respect to any premises where a trade waste permit exists or where trade waste is likely to be generated:

On Development Application

  1. where an application for a Material Change of Use is lodged for new premises or extensions to premises intended for industrial and commercial uses (hereafter referred to as ‘such premises')
  2. where an application for plumbing and/or drainage work for such premises is lodged
  3. on application for reconfiguration of a lot with such premises

Other situations

  1. change in tenancy of such premises
  2. change of ownership of such premises
  3. change of process technology at such premises
  4. improvements or additions to process stream in such premises
  5. existing premises where trade waste is found to discharge to sewerage service and no permit or legal agreement has been issued

For new applications and changes to existing approvals, you must complete the Application for Permit/Legal Agreement to Discharge Trade Waste to Sewer form and return to Ipswich Water.

Applications should include details of the proposed method of pre-treatment to ensure waste meets Sewer Admission Limits.  Plans and supporting documentation as well as trade waste drainage plans need to be forwarded with your Application Form.

Processing your application for a Permit

After your application is lodged with Ipswich Water, we will send you an 'Acknowledgment of Application' and an invoice for the application fee.

A number of methods are available to pay your invoice including credit cards and cash payments at any Council Customer Service Counter. Contact Council for your nearest location.

Upon a successful assessment of your application, Ipswich Water will issue your ‘Conditions of Discharge' after final plumbing clearance has been obtained. These conditions will be unique to your business activity and will be signed by our Chief Operating Officer. These conditions shall be accompanied by an invoice for the applicable permit fee.

Successful applications

Upon receiving 'Permit to Discharge Trade Waste' to Council's sewer you may start to discharge in strict accordance to stated conditions.

Some further information:

  • Any plumbing and drainage work associated with the installation of any treatment process must be in accordance with the Standard Sewerage Law and Australian Standards, and may require certification as part of the approval process for both plumbing and drainage work and the trade waste permit.
  • Trade waste approvals, conditions and recommendations in relation to trade waste infrastructure, where associated with a Development Application, will be issued as part of the Development Permit.
