Wastewater Services

Ipswich Water is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of wastewater services based on our wastewater strategy. The strategy's priority is efficient, high quality and environmentally responsible wastewater treatment and disposal with an emphasis on waste minimisation and recycling.

Essentially, wastewater is 'spent' water from a community. It occurs as a result of domestic, commercial and industrial water use. An average person produces approximately 200 litres of wastewater every day. The collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater is a crucial element of the natural water cycle that maintains nature's water balance.

Wastewater is 99.7 per cent water, and by far greatest volumes originate from showers, baths and washing machines. Wastewater also comes from the discharges of our licensed commercial and industrial customers.

Wastewatercentre2 TemplateWastewater is collected via our sewerage system and transported to our four Sewerage Treatment Plants where it is treated to a high standard and returned to the waterways or recycled for 'fit for purpose' applications.

Our Sewerage Treatment Plants now provide Recycled Water Services to non-residential water users to diversify Ipswich's bulk water supplies and reduce the demand on town (potable) water. This contributes to our objective of a sustainable water future for Ipswich.
